Contributed by Sharon Butler / If January feels dreary, cheer up. Take a look at this long, interesting list of exhibtions that are opening in NYC. Make sure to double-check the dates, bring proof of vaccination, wear a mask, and call before heading out. It never hurts to make sure they haven’t closed due to Covid. In Brooklyn, Charles Yuen has a timely show of paintings that consider “the weathered conditions of our humanness” at Atlantic 490 Gallery on Atlantic Avenue. In DUMBO, Mark Tribe is having his first solo show at Minus Space. Tribe’s new work is precipitated by an obsession with the changing climate and how it will affect the flora and fauna on the planet. At Soloway, one of the last galleries in Williamsburg, look for Wells Chandler’s show, “HOs in the House.” Chandler has determined that there are four stages of Santa: “You believe in Santa. You don�t believe in Santa. You are Santa.You look like Santa.” Which stage are you at? From Soloway, walk to Bushwick (it’s not that far) and check out Underdonk, where Lauren Collings & Sarah McDougald Kohn are having a two-person show.
There’s still time to catch Robert Janitz at Canada and Bill Schwarz at Theodore, both in Tribeca, and Ann Toebbe at Tibor de Nagy on the LES. Nearby, Holly Coulis is in town with a solo at Klaus von Nichtssagend. In Chelsea, at DC Moore, Alexi Worth presents “Nearness,” the show of sexy, larger-than-life, glassware paintings on mesh that was postponed during lockdown. In the back room, look for Chie Fueki “You &I,” Fueki’s first solo at DC Moore. Scan the whole list. All in all, it’s an uplifting line-up for the grayest, longest month of the year.
