Two Coats Selected Gallery Guide: Summer 2020

Flattening the curve: Governor Andrew Cuomo’s commemorative pandemic poster, “New York Tough”

Does time exist if there arent activities and events to fill it up? According to Aristotle and other philosophers, no. Time is inexorably connected to the things embedded in it. While in Covid-19 lockdown, time passed surprisingly quickly. I learned to keep a schedule and relish, really to look forward to, small events throughout the day, like reading the news on my phone (8-9am), walking our shih-tzu Ernie (9-9:30am), having breakfast (apple and peanut butter with more news reading), and finally getting to work on some drawings or blog writing. Gosh, is it 11:30 already? Time for Cuomo. Next a 2pm lunch and more news. A bit more work, then behold at 7pm the neighborhood pan-banging out the window, moving on to dinner home cooked every night, since all of the restaurants were closed and we werent sure what exactly was spreading the virus. At 9 pm, wed watch a film or a few episodes of a TV series, and then I was asleep by 11:30.

This went on for two months, each day like the one before it and the one after, until I figured out, as the curve began to flatten, that I was physically capable of riding my bike from our UWS apartment to my Dumbo studio and back. Once I was able to order my life around time in the studio again, things seemed to revert to something like normal: improvisation and planning on the fly returned to life. Groundhog Day was over, at least for the time being. Now, with NYC entering Phase Three of the reopening, we get to throw a new activity into the mix. Along with the Met, galleries are beginning to open, some at regular hours and others by appointment only. Well update the list as we get more information. To be honest, Ive enjoyed the solitude, but Im ready to experience some scale, materiality, and surface again. See you out there, masks on, six feet apart.   Sharon Butler
