Two Coats Selected Gallery Guide: September 2019

CANADA: Xylor Jane

UPDATED / The number of painting shows in the September guide is truly impressive. Highlights include Loie Hallowell?s first solo show at Pace, Elizabeth Hazan?s debut at Johannes Vogt, and William Powhida?s first NYC solo in five years at Postmasters (also at Posmasters: Diana Cooper’s first solo there in six years). Lisson is presenting work by French painter Bernard Piffaretti, whom they now represent, and Karen Flatow of Crush Curatorial has moved to a bigger Chelsea space and changed the gallery?s name to Hesse Flatow. Winston W?chter is presenting Catherine Howe’s ?The Pleasure Garden,? her first exhibition with the gallery, and James Cohen,  Andrew Kreps, CANADA are opening Tribeca locations. Congratulations to Deborah Zlotsky, who received a 2019 Guggenheim Fellowship; her paintings of rigorous geometric form are on view this month at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts. I probably won?t make it to too many openings myself because I?ll be up in Ithaca, teaching a couple classes at Cornell while Carl Ostendarp is on sabbatic leave. I?m looking forward to spending some time in Cornell?s Herbert F. Johnson Museum and will report back. This past week I saw Vertigo Sea, a visually stunning but heartbreaking three-channel video installation by John Akomfrah, part of the Johnson?s upcoming ?how the light gets in,? a sprawling, museum-wide exhibition that includes projects about the movement of people across the globe.

  1. The sheer variety within this exhibition is a welcome change of pace from what I often see in events and gallery displays. It really feels like there is something that can appeal to people across the board from the novice art fan to the educated enthusiast. The use of vivid coloration and pattern in Lauren Portada’s Sneaky Sock, Paulina Peavy/Lacamo’s Untitled and Bernard Piffaretti’s Lisson really appeal to me.
