Two Coats Selected Gallery Guide / September 2018

Jane Fine at Pierogi, Lower East Side

Contributed by Sharon Butler / Last fall, there was a dearth of solo exhibitions by female painters. This September, a slew of seasoned women have mounted terrific shows. They include Katherine Bradford, Jane Fine (image at top), Elena Sisto, Kyle Staver, Barbara Takenaga, Charline von Heyl, and more. Ive put together a list of some worthwhile September painting shows, and dont forget that the NY Art Book Fair runs from September 21-23 and Bushwick Open Studios is on the weekend of the 28th. For a more comprehensive, all-media listing of September exhibitions, check out The List on artcritical and ArtForums ARTGUIDE. Excellent phone apps like See Saw Gallery Guide and NYArtBeat allow you to bookmark exhibitions and then display the gallery locations on a neighborhood map.

  1. Don’t miss my show at The Bowery Gallery called ” Mobile Homes” up through September the 29th.

  2. Exciting exhibition news outside of New York (believe it or not!):
“Dep(art)ing Passengers”, an exhibition of my paintings at the Fort Smith, Arkansas Regional Airport through January 7, 2019. The venue is important news for everyone in and out of New York because the Fort Smith Airport hosts 89,500 enplaning passengers a year plus the numerous people who pick up and drop off passengers, meaning my 4 month show will see 30,000+ people at a minimum in foot traffic. While big airports have been around for a while as art venues, smaller airports have not been been adequately explored. Fort Smith Airport Staff have been exceptionally easy to work with and very supportive. With all of the stiff competition for gallery shows–my great paintings aside–this art event is worth formal attention from blogs like “Two Coats of Paint” as a service alert to emerging artists.
