Two Coats Selected Gallery Guide: May 2019

To everyone who has struggled through another academic year, final crits are over, so the time has come to get out and see some shows. We dont usually put museum exhibitions on our list, but dont miss the 2019 Whitney Biennial, which opens this week. I went to the press preview, and I have to agree with Andrew Russeth (at ArtNews) who calls the show polite. Indeed, the diverse group of 75 artists share their experiences in the gentlest of ways. Every piece has a story in terms of culture, history, materials, and process, so I recommend listening to the two-minute podcasts, in which the artists talk about the work selected. Also, heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all the MFA graduates heading out into the world and looking for jobs and studio space. No matter what zodiac sign you are, this is your Two Coats of Paint May horoscope: If you stopped making paintings during grad school, now is the time to start again. Here is a list of some shows that will get you going.
