This month Two Coats of Paint welcomes Jim Shrosbree to the studio for a seven day artist’s residency.  A professor of painting and drawing at Maharishi University in Fairfield, Iowa, Shrosbree uses diverse materials such as ceramic, plaster, wire, aluminum, and suede to create intimately-scaled sculptures and wall-based objects.

Shrosbree earned his MFA in Ceramics at the University of Montana in Missoula, has been a recent fellow at MacDowell and Yaddo, and, in 2016, had a solo  at Paul Kotula Projects in Detroit. In his artist’s statement, Shrosbree writes:

Between what is known and not known is the wakefulness of the present, without past or future. This abstract nature of reality is not really about doing or what has been done and becomes artifact, but what is. Ultimately it is a connectedness that plays the role of “life spark”, always unspent, continuously potent, before and after every moment.

I’m looking forward to starting a conversation with Jim when he is in residence at the studio in DUMBO, from Saturday, March 19, through Sunday, March 26. He will be scheduling studio visits throughout the week, and, in addition, we will host an Open Studio on Wednesday, March 22, 6-8 pm. I hope readers will give him a warm welcome and stop by to say hello.
