Back in June, the art team at The L Magazine selected Ginny Casey for their “Best Open Studio” award during the sprawling Bushwick Open Studios weekend. Tonight, Casey’s first solo exhibition, “Green Teeth” opens at Culture Room, a small Bushwick gallery that set up shop on Starr Street in May. In an interview at Art Fag City, Casey, a recent RISD grad, said that she’s drawn to absurdities.
[F]rom off-kilter
proportions to spatial tricks. I like when things are odd and a little
improbable. I remember having this recurring sensation in my
childhood where part of my hand was growing to an enormous mass. It was
out of control, completely disproportionate. Maybe I was having dreams
about it. I still get this weird feeling when I think about it…I�ve also noticed
there are a lot of paintings throughout art history with
similar deformities. I�m sure I�ve been influenced by all of it.
Embracing sincerity, symbolism, and personal narrative, Casey paints clunky shapes, exaggerated limbs and oddly proportioned objects that remind me
of Amy Sillman and Susan Rothenberg. She has a light touch–her paint handling is delicate without seeming tentative or contingent.
Looks like a good show. Highly recommended.
