Julia Jacquette: Wish fulfillment

Julia Jacquette, "Bourbon, Straight," 2009, oil on wood panel, 8 x 8"

Julia Jacquette, "Scotch, Rocks," 2008, oil on linen, 77 x 100"

In her first solo at Anna Kustera, Julia Jacquette paints seductive, velvety images culled from the internet, TV programs, movies, the sides of buses, the walls of subway stations, and magazine ads. Like enlarged photographs, the delicately painted images become less realistic and more elusive as the canvases grow larger. They inspire a peculiar  double yearning-- both for the objects depicted and for the paintings themselves. As Ken Johnson wrote in his NYTimes review last week, Jacquette's images "could cause a recovering alcoholic’s grip on sobriety to waver."

"Julia Jacquette: Water, Liquor, Hair Images," Anna Kustera Gallery, New York, NY. Through May 14, 2011.

the painings are so beautiful and easy to like that for one second I even doubt it could be trustworthy as real art or even good.
But... what the hell, they are wonderful paintings, I wish could go there now and see it closer. I love it.
